Is there anywhere that people can access the generic background for established races in the LT universe? For example: I've currently created a Satyr (fae) character for playing at the GEF, following the death of my previous beastkin character; however, I don't have much of an idea of the origins of fae in the LT universe nor how they're handled.

Is there somewhere I could obtain this information without having to unduly pester the plot reps? If not then it might be a good idea to have this information added to the LT website in the future.

Cheers,

Jon

Generaly speaking, fae are magical(ish) and have what you may call an extreme allergy to iron (as a guideline). Thats what i have managed to gather.

In truth, there is no hard and fast background really. Whatever you can come up with can usually be accomodated. Failing that, a research request at the bards guild may turn up some handy info over the winter.

THIS is a horribly out of date resource, but its about the best your going to get at the moment. Try contacting your faction command or other people in your faction that have been around a while and seem quite knowledgeable on such things. they may be able to point you in the direction of more useful information.

All in all, what is it that you want out of your character? thats the real question you should be asking.

The origins and ancient history of the various races is all determined but none of this is necessary to play a character (it can be found out IC through research or those characters who have already done it).

The more recent background and nature of any given race is much more flexible and varies greatly between (even within) Factions - this is especially true of fey. With your example, you could get away with pretty much any background though it is good to speak to either Faction command or established players of similar/related characters to help develop some internal consistency.

This is a matter of personal preference but I start a new character with a general background in mind but open on specific details - nothing is set in stone until I tell someone else IC (and not necessarily even then). That way I can subtly adjust the character as I work out the direction it goes in play, retro-fitting the background in my head as appropriate.

That's pretty much the approach I was adopting, general background and then fill in the specifics later once we find out more - just looking for some inspiration really, my character is pretty much sorted (i'm playing a healer with some healer & mage OS skills) but am just interested in regards to what has gone before (fae-wise).

Cheers :)

Have sent you PM with my email address :) will have a swing by the Tarantulas at the event, wasn't aware there were so many Fae (aside from Ferenzi) in the faction.

What sort of cartoons are you after? Might be interested in that :)

Well if i'm doing a newspaper, i want it to follow the standard newspaper format... and they always have a funny page!

Something like a garfield, or a dilbert set in Erdraja... or if you're feeling adventurous a Farside?
I was thinking with a Tarantula twist to it, so maybe a garfilithid, or a LOLthcat?

A few three or four panel cartoon strips... If you fancy giving it a go there would be a few coins in it for you! (depending on how well it sells)

Well i'll see how much time i've got IC when I get to the GEF, since i'm going to be trying to establish my new character I may not have time - but i'll definitely try to swing by the Tarantulas and share a few drinks with your factions fey :)

I think the main difficulty you'd face with cartoons set in Edreja is that most cartoons rely on a shared knowledge or history to get their humour across, with a lot of the Edreja background being a bit "up in the air" or only known to certain people it might be difficult to get widespread appeal.

As a suggestion, a jokes page or crossword works quite well if the comic thing doesn't work out. Magazines tend to sell alright (I averaged about 20-25 per event, allowing time for plot and fighting; and that was during the times of the July moots, so shorter events). Bored guildies are a great market, I found, especially if you can link your publication to them in some way through your patter. ("Ohooo! So much gold armour! You must be rich! Can I interest you in a copy of Loded magazine? It's all about gold. Guaranteed 100% beguilement free when bought from a legitimate vendor, which is me. Check out the centrefold... oh yes sir, that's the money shot... 100% pure Cymrijan gold...")

As a guideline, if you're getting anyone to send in ads/articles, I really recommend asking for stuff about 3 weeks before it's due out because some bits will inevitably be late, so then you'll have some time for typesetting/layouts and stitching/stapling etc.

Thanks for the advice Archanejil! It's very much appriciated

The printer will be on site, and i was thinking of spending the first day or maybe the first day and a half putting up to date news in the paper and having it authorised by the faction higher ups,
and distrbution on day two...

And Joe, the cartoon could just be fantasy based, if it's IC then it's all good! An Elf if an Elf in LT or in WOW...
I had an idea of a Drow dating guide, where the punchline everytime was the suitor being enslaved or murdered for getting it wrong,

Maybe as non of the papers staff are playing humans, you could do some sort of "stupid humans" cartoon, or mix up stereotypes and have a posh orc, dribbling human, and a healer who only has a hammer?

It's not like you HAVE to draw the cartoon at the gef or gathering, there's plenty of downtime between the events!

Oh I know :) I'm just musing, considering some of the facts that have to be taken into account, i'll try and come up with a few before the GEF and send them to you - if you have any particular themes or jokes you want covered then mail them to me and i'll see what I can do.

All newspapers have a sports section too. Seems a generic thing. So maybe if you report on some of the games at the GEF then it may inspire teams to play more than a single event, even to the point of having a league, or union, and even a team uniform (if they don't already). Just a thought.
Fear.

Fear is our friend.

Fear tells us when something is bad, and it gives us power over other people.

Fear gives us power to command others and make them obey our every whim, to make people bend to our will, and as long as we are not the primary focus of that fear, it will never come back to bite us on our proverbial butts.

But beware, for fear can easily become your master.

You have been weighed,

You have been measured,

And,

You have most definitely,

been found wanting.

Welcome to the new world.

Vorla, this coming GEF will be the first event, that isn't a gathering, i've been to,
And i'm hoping to get a sports page out of it!

The only problem is real world money, i'm probably going to have to hire an IC sports correspondant for next years GEF.

And DM, I've been given a lot of faction support for this venture, and i've been told people will pay up to a stell per issue, so hopefully i'll be on to a winner with this!

Ask at least a stell. Anything less and people won't take it seriously. Or have change!
And don't skip on typesetting and production.
If it looks good, people will like it more than some tat.

I felt, years ago, that I was going down market when I dropped from folded A3 to stapled A4, but it did make collating easier - and not needing multiples of 4 sides per issue!
And pictures. People like pictures. But make sure they are prepped to reproduce clearly.
And get access to a duplex printer!

Erm... wanna buy any backnumbers?....

Now i don't have the option of paper sizing... i'm bringing an a4 printer wih me and running it off the car battery! (If the printing press works as it's supposed to, back issues won't be an issue, as it were.)

Photoshopping all pictures taken on site, to give it a genuine olde worlde, hand drawn look, and after getting all the latest news typed and set, it's then getting it out and about!

So far, i've pre-prepared four pages (two interviews and a couple of smaller on going stories) and laid out the horoscopes / sudoku / weather / clasified ads page
and made enquiries about a few cartoons (Cheers LargeJo!) so it should be a nice size once i've got a sports page done at the GEF and a few other stories down.

So far i've got two staff members for the newspaper too, (Both Fae, but it's not like that was deliberate... I'm no racist) so it's really taking off!

A stell it is then, i mean, want it to be taken seriously.
If it sells well i can then arrange to pay my employees,

Can't wait!!!

Yes DM, initially i'm thinking 20 issues,
with 10 factions, as well as the beer tent, guild tents, ritual circle & possibly the monster room to offer them for sale at, i'd say that i should be able to sell the full print run.

Depending on popularity a 2nd print run (or late edition) could be done if required.

I'm going to look into costings for things like a better printer / getting all the printing done local to the site... but for a first event i'd rather use the equipment i've already got to minimise the realworld expense of it.
